Unity Park: Community Renewal Project
- Status: In Progress
- Type: Flagship
Unity Park is not just a construction project, it is a social intervention rooted in community, dignity, and long-term impact. Located on the island of Espiritu Santo in Vanuatu, this initiative is transforming a long-neglected piece of public land into a vibrant community park and social hub. At its heart, Unity Park is about the children, youth, and future generations of Santo; creating safe, inclusive spaces where discipline, confidence, belonging, and opportunity can take root. We are turning under-developed public space into living social infrastructure that serves the community every day, not just at ribbon-cutting moments.
When completed, Unity Park will feature a playground and sports fields for youth, sheltered areas for family and cultural gatherings, clean water and sanitation facilities, and eventually a community jetty to improve access for nearby villages. The project is being executed in practical stages to maximize participation and sustainability: Stage 1 focuses on creating a safe play space for children, while later stages will add amenities like seating, lighting, hygiene facilities, sports grounds, landscaping, and more. This phased approach ensures early benefits can be delivered quickly (like giving kids a safe place to play now) while laying groundwork for bigger additions over time.
Unity Park is truly a community-driven effort. The local municipality has officially endorsed the project, with the Mayor of Luganville confirming its alignment with the community’s priorities. Local families are engaged in the planning, providing input so the park reflects what they need most. Uniquely, one of our Directors lives in Santo, where her children will also use this park. This proximity reinforces long-term accountability and a personal commitment to the park’s care and success. This isn’t a case of outsiders dropping in a project and walking away; we are here for the long haul. Our team will maintain and steward Unity Park alongside the community for years to come, ensuring it remains safe, welcoming, and well-kept for future generations.
For donors, Unity Park represents something rare, a project that is deeply local yet globally informed, professionally governed yet personally lived, and ambitious in scope but grounded in reality. It combines local heart with world-class standards. The initiative is led on the ground by experienced community builders, with oversight from our Australian board, and informed by global best practices in sustainable design and child-friendly spaces. The Foundation’s founder, Peter Bowman, has personally backed this vision with an initial AUD 100,000 donation. This seed funding has catalysed the project and signals to all stakeholders that our leadership stands fully behind Unity Park; ethically, financially, and emotionally. We are now inviting other partners and donors to join us in making Unity Park a reality. Together, we are building more than a park, we are building a legacy of hope, resilience, and unity for the people of Vanuatu.
